The traditional kite festival, Makar Sankranti which falls tomorrow, celebrates the movement of the sun into the cancer zodiac.
Jaipur:
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are flying high, not just in the political spectrum but also in the bazaars that are flooded with kites this Makar Sankranti. The traditional kite festival, Makar Sankranti which falls tomorrow, celebrates the movement of the sun into the cancer zodiac. But for kite lovers in Jaipur it is time to move to the roof tops and fly kites and the market this time is flooded with kites decorated with faces of top leaders like, Vasundhara Raje, Mr Modi and Mr Kejriwal.
70-year-old Gafur Khan's family has been in the kite-making business for generations is currently busy making larger-than-life, seven feet long - Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal kites, which are proving to be a big draw at his shop in the Handipura market in Jaipur's walled city . The seven-foot long kites are of course too big to fly but smaller versions of Kejriwal, Modi and even Vasundhara Raje kites are selling like hot cakes.
"People who come to my shop ask for Kejriwal kites, it's amazing what he has pulled off in Delhi, that's why he appears to be so popular," says Gafur.
Says another kite seller Ashraf Ahmed on the popular kites, "Whoever is on top in politics that person's kites always sell, it's about brand value."
But if political stars are the flavour of the season this time around, film stars are always a hot favourite and King Khan Shahrukh riding high on the success of his blockbuster Chennai Express is still the number one choice.
