Three Maoists were gunned down today in an encounter with security forces in the dense forests of Chhattisgarh's Left Wing Extremism -hit Dantewada district, the police said.
The skirmish took place between a team of District Reserve Group (DRG) and insurgents in the jungles of Katekalyan police station area, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Kamlochan Kashyap told Press Trust of India.
While undertaking an anti-Maoist operation in Katekalyan, located 450 km away from the state capital, security forces spotted a group of armed cadres between Lakhapal and Turrempara villages following which a gun-battle broke out between both the sides, the Mr Kashyap said.
After the ensuing gunfight that lasted for around an hour, Maoists escaped into deep jungles.
After searches at the spot, bodies of the three Maoists along with as many weapons were recovered from the spot, he said.
Further details are awaited as security forces are yet to reach back to their camp, the police official said.
