Three policemen killed in militant attack in Sopore

Srinagar: Three policemen were killed tonight when heavily-armed militants opened fire on them in Sopore town of north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

Terrorists carried out the attack on the house of Mohammad Abdullah, a separatist leader belonging to Shabir Shah's Democratic Freedom Party at R M Pura area of the town, police sources said.

The security men at the house returned the fire, triggering a gunbattle in which three policemen were killed while the terrorists, suspected to be of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba, managed to escape from the spot.

Police reinforcements have been sent to the spot to launch combing operations.

Earlier in the day, militants also attacked police personnel posted at the State Bank of India branch in Sopore.

No one was, however, injured in the attack.

Later, militants also opened fire at a police post in a nearby locality but there was no casualty.
