Thursday dawns clear in Mumbai, 272 buildings declared unsafe

After a chaotic Wednesday with heavy rains lashing the city, Thursday has dawned clear. There has been no rain in Mumbai since last night.

The weather bureau has forecast heavy rainfall with strong winds and thundershowers in parts of city and suburbs over the next 24 hours. Between June 13 and 17, it has said, there will be tides measuring between 4.58 metres and 4.73 metres.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has declared 272 buildings unsafe as they are old, dilapidated and unrepaired and a hazard in this season.

Those residing in the buildings have been asked to evacuate. The landslide-prone areas where the warning has been sounded include, Rajeev Gandhi Nagar, Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, Goregaon (East), Teen Dongri, Goregaon (West), Ambedkar Nagar, Goregaon Mulund Link Road, Goregaon (East) and Upper Govind Nagar, Goregaon Mulund Link Road, Goregaon (East).

Eight people had died early on Wednesday morning when a wall separating a slum and a building construction collapsed on the slum in Thane. Among them were two children. Wednesday was chaotic for all Mumbaikars with waterlogged streets, train services hit and flight delays. Worst affected in the downpour were flights with airport operations going into a tailspin. (See pictures)

Visibility fluctuated through the day, because of which flights into the city were late by 45 minutes while flights out were delayed up to three hours. Departures are now is on time.

Closing the short runway only added to the delays.

"I have been waiting at the airport for almost six hours now and there has been no response," said one of the passengers.

"There is nobody at the counters. We have been standing for three-to- four hours now and then they tell us its late by a half-an-hour," said another stranded passenger.

Services on the Western Railway Line were disrupted for over an hour after part of a tree fell on the tracks.

National disaster management teams were stationed at various places in the city to ensure public safety and convenience.

Other Maharashtra cities too reeled under the impact of the Monsoon rain.  Forty-six people have died in rain-related incidents across Maharashtra.

The incessant rain continues to lash the city since Tuesday night. From 0830 hours to 1130 hours, the island city recorded 19.22 mm rainfall, eastern suburbs 18.92 mm and western suburbs 9.80 mm of rainfall.
