Tight security across India for Republic Day

New Delhi: Security across the country is extremely tight ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.

In one of the highest-ever deployment planned for the occasion, over 18,000 policemen will secure parade route from Vijay Chowk to Red Fort on Tuesday.

A ground-to-air security apparatus will also be put in place as there are reports of Lashkar-e-Taiba strikes using para-gliders. Anti-aircraft guns, quick reaction teams, and commandos of the National Security Guard will be deployed at various places.

Several states and cities are on high alert. After violent incidents, night trains in Assam have been cancelled until January 26. Security personnel have been deployed in large numbers in trouble-prone areas.  All vehicles are being searched at checkpoints and special patrols are conducting surprise checks.

The Indian Coastguard and the Indian Navy too have stepped up coastal patrols since the Mumbai attackers had entered the country by sea.

Crowded historical monuments vulnerable to terrorist strikes are being specially guarded. Cities like Agra are on high alert.

"Checking keeps on happening every now and then. This also checks if the administration is working properly. As January 26 is approaching, the whole law and order scenario, terrorist activity and the inflow of the tourists from outside and the vehicles which come from outside the state are all being checked so that no unfortunate incident takes place.", said, Uday Pratap, Superintendent of Police, Agra.
