Tight security in Delhi ahead of I-Day

New Delhi:

Amid intelligence inputs about possible terror attacks ahead of Independence Day, an impregnable ground-to-air security apparatus is being put in place in the capital to pre-empt any such strikes.

Thousands of personnel of Delhi Police and paramilitary are being deployed in and around the city, especially near Red Fort from where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will unfurl the tricolour and address the nation.

The government has already made it public intelligence inputs about possible Lashkar-e-Toiba terror strikes in three cities -- Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad -- ahead of the August 15 celebrations.

"We are deploying personnel in abundance. We are not taking any chance," Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S N Srivastava told reporters when asked about the arrangements ahead of Independence Day.

Fourty CCTVs will be installed in and around Red Fort to ensure incident-free celebrations while sharpshooters of the NSG will be deployed on the high-rises near the 17th century Mughal monument.

Agencies are constantly reviewing arrangements at the Red Fort and are in the process of zeroing in on the 'safety houses' to where the Prime Minister and other leaders should be taken to in case of a terror strike.
