Delhi will start a 10 pm to 5 am night curfew from now till April 30, the city government said today, staring at a steep rise in Covid cases.

This is the toughest order by the Delhi government since the start of a fresh surge in coronavirus infections in the capital last month.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Friday said Delhi was going through the fourth wave of COVID-19 but a lockdown was not being considered yet.

"As per the current situation, we are not considering imposing a lockdown. We are closely monitoring the situation and such a decision will only be taken after due public consultation," he had told reporters.

Meanwhile, a total of 96,982 cases have been reported in a span of 24 hours, while the death count increased to 1,65,547 with 446 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

India on Monday recorded an all-time high of 1,03,558 single-day new coronavirus infections in a span of 24 hours.

Registering a steady increase for the 27th day in row, the active cases have increased to 7,88,223 comprising 6.21 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 92.48 per cent, the data stated. 

The active caseload was at its lowest at  1, 35,926 on February 12 comprising 1.25 per cent of the total infections.

Over 5.5 lakh COVID-19 doses administered on Tuesday
With over 5.5 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses administered till 8 pm on Tuesday, the country''s cumulative count of vaccine doses reached over 8.40 crore.

The Health Ministry said that 8,40,65,357 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to provisional data released by the ministry, a total of 5,62,807 vaccine doses were given till 8 pm today, the 81st day of nationwide COVID-19 vaccination.

These include 89,60,966 healthcare workers (HCWs) who have taken the 1st dose and 53,77,011 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 97,30,304 frontline workers (FLWs) (1st dose), 42,68,788 FLWs (2nd dose), 2,00,51,197 for over 45 years old to 59 years old (1st dose), 3,96,769 for over 45 years old to 59 years old (2nd dose), 3,44,18,802 for above 60 years (1st dose) and 8,61,520 for above 60 years (2nd dose) .

Reconsider COVID-19 restrictions: Devendra Fadnavis writes to Maharashtra Chief Minister
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, requesting him to reconsider restrictions imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Mr Fadnavis asked the Chief Minister to discuss these matters with all stratum of society again and impose restrictions so that the lives of commoners are not affected.

On April 4, the Maharashtra government announced new guidelines under its "Break the Chain" campaign to curb the spread of novel coronavirus infections to remain in force till April 30.

The state, which has been the major contributor of COVID-19 cases in the past few days, reported over 55,000 new infections in the last 24 hours.

Night curfew in Chandigarh as Covid cases rise
The Chandigarh administration decided to impose curfew from 10 pm to 5 am in the wake of the soaring coronavirus cases in the city. The night curfew will be implemented from Wednesday, according to a spokesperson.

Chandigarh Administrator VP Singh Badnore directed police to ensure strict implementation of the night curfew and told hospital authorities to ensure all health workers get themselves vaccinated at the earliest. He said stricter measures like weekend curfew and closure of crowded places would be considered if people do not follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Jammu and Kashmir records 561 COVID-19 cases, 2 more deaths
Jammu and Kashmir recorded 561 fresh COVID-19 cases that took its tally to 1,34,015, while two more fatalities pushed the death count to 2,012, officials said. Of the new cases, 384 were reported from the Kashmir division and 177 from the Jammu division, they said.

Srinagar district recorded the highest number of fresh cases at 222, including 63 travellers, followed by 99 in Jammu and 54 in Baramulla, according to the officials.

EU drug regulator says it has "not yet reached conclusion" on AstraZeneca vaccine
The EU's drug regulator said it is still deciding whether the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine causes blood clots, after a top official said there was a clear link. The European Medicines Agency's safety committee "has not yet reached a conclusion and the review is currently ongoing", the Amsterdam-based EMA said in a statement.

"We will communicate and hold a press briefing as soon as the review is finalised. This is currently expected tomorrow (Wednesday, 7 April) or on Thursday, 8 April," it added.

India administers 43 lakh Covid vaccine doses in a day, highest single day coverage so far
India administered more than 43 lakh Covid-19 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, which is the highest single-day vaccine coverage so far, said the Union Health Ministry.

The cumulative vaccination coverage has exceeded 8 crore and the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted so far has surpassed 25 crore.

"In a landmark achievement in India's fight against COVID-19, more than 43 lakh vaccination doses were administered in the last 24 hours. This is the highest single day vaccination coverage in the country so far," said the official statement. "On day 80 of the vaccination drive on April 5, a total of 43,00,966 vaccine doses were given. Out of which, 39,00,505 beneficiaries were vaccinated across 48,095 sessions for 1st dose and 4,00,461 beneficiaries received 2nd dose of vaccine," the statement said.

237 Coronavirus Cases In Puducherry, Tally Touches 42,776

Puducherry logged 237 fresh COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours ending 10 am on Tuesday, taking the aggregate to 42,776. Two more persons (both are women) aged between 62 and 87 years succumbed to the illness. With these deaths, the toll now rose to 688. Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said the new cases were identified at the end of the examination of 3018 samples.

The Centre on Tuesday asked all its employees aged 45 years and above to get themselves vaccinated to effectively contain the spread of COVID-19. They are further advised to continue to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour even after vaccination by frequent washing of hands and sanitisation, wearing a mask or face cover and observing social distancing, etc., an order issued by the Personnel Ministry said.
