Delhi will start a 10 pm to 5 am night curfew from now till April 30, the city government said today, staring at a steep rise in Covid cases.
This is the toughest order by the Delhi government since the start of a fresh surge in coronavirus infections in the capital last month.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Friday said Delhi was going through the fourth wave of COVID-19 but a lockdown was not being considered yet.
"As per the current situation, we are not considering imposing a lockdown. We are closely monitoring the situation and such a decision will only be taken after due public consultation," he had told reporters.
Meanwhile, a total of 96,982 cases have been reported in a span of 24 hours, while the death count increased to 1,65,547 with 446 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
India on Monday recorded an all-time high of 1,03,558 single-day new coronavirus infections in a span of 24 hours.
Registering a steady increase for the 27th day in row, the active cases have increased to 7,88,223 comprising 6.21 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 92.48 per cent, the data stated.
The active caseload was at its lowest at 1, 35,926 on February 12 comprising 1.25 per cent of the total infections.

With over 5.5 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses administered till 8 pm on Tuesday, the country''s cumulative count of vaccine doses reached over 8.40 crore.
The Health Ministry said that 8,40,65,357 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
According to provisional data released by the ministry, a total of 5,62,807 vaccine doses were given till 8 pm today, the 81st day of nationwide COVID-19 vaccination.
These include 89,60,966 healthcare workers (HCWs) who have taken the 1st dose and 53,77,011 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 97,30,304 frontline workers (FLWs) (1st dose), 42,68,788 FLWs (2nd dose), 2,00,51,197 for over 45 years old to 59 years old (1st dose), 3,96,769 for over 45 years old to 59 years old (2nd dose), 3,44,18,802 for above 60 years (1st dose) and 8,61,520 for above 60 years (2nd dose) .

Delhi has logged 5,100 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, which is its highest single-day Covid figure this year.
Karnataka Congress Working President Eshwar Khandre today said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and is undergoing treatment at hospital. "On slightly developing symptoms, I had undergone a test and the result has come positive. There is no reason to worry. As per COVID protocol I'm admitted in the hospital and undergoing treatment," Mr Khandre tweeted.
Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra said he has tested positive for coronavirus, and is under home quarantine. Mr Kamra, on Twitter today, said his parents have also tested positive for the virus and are admitted to a hospital in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

West Bengal on Monday recorded the year's highest single-day spike of 1,957 COVID-19 cases, while 6,700 people were detected with the infection in the five days of April, the state health department said.
Altogether 19 coronavirus fatalities were recorded this month including four on Monday.
The death count thus mounted to 10,348 and the state's caseload went up to 5,95,576, the department said in a bulletin.
In the last 24 hours, 664 people recovered from the disease in the state, taking the total number of cured people to 5,73,782 people.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot held a high-level review meeting on Monday night over the surge in coronavirus cases.
Ashok Gehlot discussed the situation with divisional commissioners, district collectors, police officers and top doctors. In the meeting, the experts laid emphasis on public participation and support in containing the spread of the virus, according to officials.
They said the government guidelines issued on Sunday was helpful in handling the situation but public participation was crucial.
