New Delhi:

India's total tally of COVID-19 cases surged to 1,25,89,067 with 1,03,558 new infections, while the recoveries have surged to 1,16,82,136, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

The death count increased to 1,65,101 with 478 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed. 

Meanwhile, Maharashtra will impose a weekend lockdown and night curfew beginning Monday as it battles a spike in Covid-19 cases, authorities said Sunday.

From Monday night until the end of April, a night curfew will be imposed, gatherings of more than four people banned, and private offices, restaurants, cinemas, swimming pools, bars, places of worship and public places such as beaches shut.

On weekends, only essential services would be allowed to operate.

"While imposing these restrictions, on the one hand, care has been taken not to affect the state's economic cycle and not to harass the workers and labourers, and emphasis has been laid on closing crowded places," the state government said in a statement late Sunday.

Public transport services would be allowed to operate, but at 50 percent capacity. Industrial and manufacturing activities in the state, as well as film shoots in Mumbaiwould be allowed to continue if health measures are observed.

COVID surge: Ashok Gehlot holds high-level meeting
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot held a high-level review meeting on Monday night over the surge in coronavirus cases.

Ashok Gehlot discussed the situation with divisional commissioners, district collectors, police officers and top doctors. In the meeting, the experts laid emphasis on public participation and support in containing the spread of the virus, according to officials.

They said the government guidelines issued on Sunday was helpful in handling the situation but public participation was crucial.

Bengal logs year's highest one-day spike of 1,957 COVID cases; 6,700 test positive in 5 days
West Bengal on Monday recorded the year's highest single-day spike of 1,957 COVID-19 cases, while 6,700 people were detected with the infection in the five days of April, the state health department said.

Altogether 19 coronavirus fatalities were recorded this month including four on Monday.

The death count thus mounted to 10,348 and the state's caseload went up to 5,95,576, the department said in a bulletin.

In the last 24 hours, 664 people recovered from the disease in the state, taking the total number of cured people to 5,73,782 people.

People's movement from containment zones won't be stopped but take caution: Noida District Magistrate
There shall be no sealing or stopping of movement of people in areas declared as containment zones in Gautam Buddh Nagar, officials said on Monday but urged residents to exercise restraint and follow COVID-19 protocols.

District Magistrate Suhas L Y made the appeal in the wake of the Uttar Pradesh government redefining the range of containment zones for medical surveillance through an order issued on Saturday amid a surge in coronavirus cases in the state once again.

According to the order, an area of 25 metre radius from the spot of COVID-19 case would be considered a containment zone and it would increase to 50 metres if there are two or more cases.

For multi-storey buildings, a single case of COVID-19 would lead to the particular floor being declared as a containment zone while the whole building or tower would be declared a containment zone if there are two or more cases.

Over 81,000 people vaccinated by Monday

Possibility of getting infected with COVID-19 after vaccination can't be ruled out: Rajasthan minister

Rajasthan Health Minister Raghu Sharma on Monday said that the possibility of getting infected with COVID-19 even after vaccination cannot be ruled out and those who got vaccinated should not give up wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

He said that testing facilities for COVID-19 will soon be increased to one lakh per day from the existing 70,000 in the state, PTI reported.

Delhi To Set Up Micro-Containment Zones Amid Covid Surge: Minister

Delhi is witnessing a fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic and to tackle it testing capacity has been ramped up while micro-containment zones were being created where two or more cases are being reported, Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Monday.

The national capital recorded 4,033 coronavirus cases on Sunday, taking the tally to over 6.76 lakh, while the death count mounted to 11,0811 with 21 new fatalities being reported, according to the bulletin issued by the health department, PTI reported.

Security tightened in Assam as 320 CAPF companies deployed for final leg of polls

As the stage is all set for the final phase of the Assam assembly polls on April 6, as many as 320 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies have been deployed to ensure a free and fair election in the state.

Out of these 320 CAPF companies, 30 are reserved for strong room duty and others for law and order duties.
