Too much bling in Indian fashion, says Sonia Gandhi

Too much bling in Indian fashion, says Sonia Gandhi
Rae Bareli, UP: Dressed in a bright yellow sari, Sonia Gandhi offered her take on Indian fashion to students studying design in her constituency of Rae Bareli.

"Sometimes a single garment will have zardozi, beads, sequins, patchwork and crystals. Apart from completely overshadowing the wearer, such garments are very uncomfortable to wear," the Congress president said.

She said her mother-in-law and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was an MP from Bareli, "had an innate sense of fashion and the simplicity of her elegance was admired all over the world".

38 students at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) listened intently as Mrs Gandhi said, "In my view, fashion does not mean opulence...to find the right colour combination, cut and proportion in a garment to ensure that it is comfortable as well is more challenging for a designer, but it results in a garment that is timelessly stylish and elegant."
