Top cop vs Mayawati government: Mishra ill or ill-treated?

Lucknow: Senior IPS officer DD Mishra has been hospitalised in Uttar Pradesh after he lashed out at Chief Minister Mayawati and accused her of being corrupt. The officer vented his anger before the media and fears that he will be targeted for speaking out against the government.

Fateh Bahadur Singh, Principal Secretary Home, who has been accused of harassing Mishra to clear purchases in the fire department, says that the cop is depressed and mentally unstable.

The Uttar Pradesh government was quick to accept the medical opinion - on the IPS officer - whose on-camera outburst against Mayawati - in his office hurt the state. Now Mishra's corruption charge battles the government and an adverse medical opinion. And he is afraid.

When asked who was he in danger of, Mishra replied, "Mayawati."

"I fear for my life," he had said.

But wary of the political fallout, Mayawati tried to signal fairplay and shunted out Mishra's boss ADG Harish Chandra as he had claimed rampant corruption in procurement process in the prison dept. Still no probe has been ordered in the charges he has leveled.

None of Uttar Pradesh's IPS colleagues have rushed to his side. However, behind the scenes they are of the opinion if Mishra was unwell, his family should have taken him to a doctor of their choice and not rudely whisked away by cops on Friday night.

The state's discomfort and rush to brand Mishra's outburst as lunacy - will fuel politics in the poll-bound state. But the incident will add to the high resentment and low morale of Uttar Pradesh cops.
