Kolkata: In what is said to be a Defence Research and Development Organisation's biggest ever academic collaboration, the foundation stone was laid for the setting up Jagadish Chandra Bose Centre for Advanced Technology at Jadavpur University campus this morning.
A sum of Rs 100 crore has been allocated for setting up the research centre and more funds will be released later.
The institute hopes to support research and development as India prepares to increase export of defence technology.
DRDO Director General Dr S Christopher said, "In China, 20 per cent of defence spending is on research and development whereas in India it is 5 per cent. This centre will bring together R&D engineers who will work on research which is application oriented."
"This is an attempt to create a research and technology hub in the eastern region. Faculties from institutes of repute in the region will participate," Jadavpur University Registrar PK Ghosh said.
"This collaboration will provide a platform to all institutes from the region to contribute and JU will play a lead role and provide leadership," Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said.
