New Delhi: The Principal Secretary in the Uttar Pradesh government, VS Pandey, has been removed from his post following reports of his alleged links with Pune-based stud farm owner Hasan Ali. Mr Ali is considered to be the country's biggest tax evader.

Mr Ali, who is currently in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate, is accused of allegedly stashed away billions of dollars in Swiss bank accounts. He was arrested last month and moved to Mumbai from Pune, where he is known for his penchant for lavish cars, homes, horses and parties.

Hasan Ali has been asked to pay Rs 70,000 crore as a penalty for tax evasion, but his lawyer claims that he is innocent of all the charges against him. He is currently lodged in the high-security Arthur Road jail in Mumbai.
