New Delhi:
India's nuclear centres are now on alert, according to intelligence sources. The government is worried that nuclear plants may be attacked by terrorists.
This alert is the latest fallout of the Headley case. David Headley was arrested by the FBI in Chicago last month, for allegedly planning terror attacks against India. Since his arrest, India has been following a potential trail of terror laid by Headley and his associate, Tawahhur Rana, who has also been arrested by the FBI.
Headley visited India nine times between 2006 and 2009. Emails intercepted by the FBI allegedly prove he was in close touch with senior members of terrorist group Lashkar-e-Toiba.
Headley visited cities where India has nuclear centres. While he did not have access to the nuclear plants, sources say he may have assessed these locations externally for terror attacks.
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at Trombay, in particular, is being closely monitored. Maharashtra has a dozen atomic establishments. The Kakrapar atomic power station in Gujarat and the heavy water plant in Baroda have also been identified as potential targets.
Experts point out that India's nuclear facilities already have elaborate security with army and naval cover.
