Train headed from Surat to Nandurbar in the north-western corner of the state slid off tracks.
Kolhapur:
As the monsoon pours down over Maharashtra, a train headed from Surat to Nandurbar in the north-western corner of the state slid off its tracks this morning.
There were few passengers on the train when five of its coaches derailed. Train services in the area have been suspended till the tracks are repaired, which is estimated to take 24 hours, according to officials.
In the same region on Nandurbar, flash floods have erupted, killing four people. About 180 cows and buffaloes have died; 170 homes are damaged in the village of Pachorbori, worst-hit in the area.
Train services in the area have been suspended till the tracks are repaired.
Heavy rains pounded Kolhapur district and other parts of North Maharashtra in the last 24 hours, substantially lifting the water level in dams and other reservoirs in the region. Regular traffic was also disrupted in Kolhapur city due to heavy water-logging in several areas.
Nearly 500 kilometres away from Kolhapur, the Nashik district has also been receiving heavy rainfall for the last 48 hours.
This has increased water levels in the river Godavari and also the Gangapur dam, the main source of drinking water for Nashik. Heavy rain led to the flooding in Godavari river. Water flowed into the banks of the river at the renowned Ramkund, a famous religious spot.
Regular traffic was also disrupted several cities in Maharashtra due to heavy water-logging.
Two cars parked near at the banks were washed away on Sunday. However, the water levels at present have gone down due to lighter rain since Monday morning.
