Trainer, co-pilot killed in air crash near Ujjain

Ujjain: A trainer aircraft crashed near here on Wednesday after hitting a telephone wire, killing the instructor and trainee pilot, police said.

The Cessna-152 plane caught fire after hitting the wire, close to a high tension electricity supply line, killing instructor Girish Koperkar (21) and trainee pilot Hitesh Karia (20), Ujjain SP Satish Saxena said.

Both of the victims hailed from Mumbai, he said, adding the mishap took place 15 kms away from this temple town.

Saxena said the aircraft belonged to Yash Air and crashed into the dry-bedded Shipra river at Kalayanpura village between 4.30 pm and 4.45 pm after taking off from Datana-Matana airstrip at 3.30 pm.

A team of Director Civil Aviation will inquire into the cause of the accident, he said.

"We are also investigating the case and have sought details from the Yash Air vice president Dilip Rawal," he said.

The Cessna 152 is an American two-seat, fixed tricycle gear, general aviation airplane, used primarily for flight training and personal use.
