Washington: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to meet Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao today to discuss the plight of the Indian students caught in the Tri-Valley University visa fraud.
Rao alongwith the Indian Ambassador to the US, Meera Shankar, is expected to meet Clinton at the US State Department today.
The two Indian diplomats are likely to follow up on the fate of the Indian students at Tri-Valley during the meeting with Clinton.
Clinton had on Monday, met Indian envoy Meera Shankar who handed over the details of the Indian students enrolled at what was dubbed a "sham university", as desired by Secretary Clinton.
The Secretary of State had also promised to help Indian students in a telephonic conversation with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Sunday.
She had agreed to intervene and sort out the matter.
During their conversation, Krishna stressed upon her to find a humanitarian and rapid solution as many students had come on a legal visa and stand to lose out academically and financially for no fault of theirs.
Krishna also asked Clinton to give students time to shift to some other university.
The California-based university was shut down on charges of a massive visa fraud.
According to a federal complaint filed in a California court in January, the university helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigration status. The university is said to have 1,555 students. As many as 95 per cent of these students are Indian nationals, the complaint said.
According to available information, 18 students of the university were radio-tagged by the ICE as part of their investigation. The radio-tagging had miffed the Indian government and New Delhi had expressed its strong displeasure at the treatment meted out to the students.
The tags were removed just ahead of Krishna's arrival in the US.
