Chennai:
Two days after four tribal women alleged they were raped by policemen in Tamil Nadu, five police personnel including an Inspector have been suspended. They have been suspended for violating the stipulation of not inquiring women and children after 6 pm.
In their complaint, the women said that cops from the Tirukovilur police station picked them up for interrogation on November 22 and sexually assaulted them that night.
Two of the complainants are married, one is pregnant.
The women allege that police took them in for a theft enquiry and raped them.
Police sources had said that the husband of one of the women was a property offender and that the police had gone to the village to nab him and others. They suggested that the women's claims of rape could be a strategy to escape legal action.
