Kolkata: The members of the Trinamool Congress students' wing at a Murshidabad college locked up a woman teacher for almost six hours on Wednesday. When a local police personnel and an administration official came to rescue her, they locked them up as well.
The woman teacher of Salar College, Kakoli Bhowmik, was gheraoed and then locked up around 1.30 pm. Around 3.30 pm, the block development officer of Salar and the officer-in-charge of the local police station came. The students allowed them to enter the room where Ms Bhowmik was in, and then locked the door from outside.
The situation lasted till almost 7 pm. The woman teacher fell ill, several phone calls were made and finally the door was unlocked and all of them were allowed to leave. The administration official has filed a complaint with the police about the harassment.
Sources in the Congress-backed Chhatra Parishad, which controls the students' union, claimed it was an attempt at a show of strength by the Trinamool students' body. The union elections are due later this month. The Trinamool supporters claim the union members are corrupt.
"This is an intolerable situation," Ms Bhowmik said after she was freed.
