The Union Cabinet clears a bill that proposes to make the "triple talaq" a criminal offence. The government hopes to get parliament nod for it during the short winter session that began today.  In August, the Supreme Court said in a landmark ruling that the practice of Muslim men uttering "talaq" three times for an instant divorce is unconstitutional. After the Bill got cleared by the cabinet, strong reactions poured on social networking site Twitter. While some hailed the verdict, some are hoping that it would pave way for a uniform civil code in the country.

Twitter users also poured gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet:

"Proud of you sir #narendramodi," said one and "Muslim women will be indebted to Modi ji for giving them relief," tweeted another.

But not everyone's pleased:

A twitter user commented,"#TripleTalaq is being made a criminal offense. This is ridiculous and shows complete insensitivity of BJP to Muslims."
