Trouble at Calcutta High Court: Police evict lawyers

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court witnessed high drama late on Thursday night when the police evicted lawyers from a disputed courtroom.

According to reports, the lawyers were protesting against a decision by the Chief Justice that the courtroom be turned to an office for lawyers and court employees. The Bar members, on the other hand, believed they needed more rooms.

"A group of around 60-70 lawyers staged a demonstration inside the court room against the allotment of a court room to the ACO. The agitating lawyers did not vacate the room till late in the night," Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Jawed Shamim said.

Rana Mukherjee, secretary of the Bar Association had questioned that despite a shortage of court rooms, why was the room allotted to the ACO.

The evicted lawyers are now on a dharna and have threatened to paralyse all courts on Friday.
