Trouble in Uttarakhand Congress: 35 suspended, 100 given notice

Dehradun: There's a new set of problems emerging for the newly formed Congress government in Uttarakhand. In a little more than a month since the party took over the state leadership, the Congress Disciplinary Committee today expelled 35 congress members from the party for the next 6 years and issued show-cause notice to 100 others.

According to the State Disciplinary Committee which took the decision today, the members have been expelled for 'indiscipline'.  Party sources say the infighting that surfaced during the state elections last month and when Vijay Bahuguna was sworn in as the chief minister of the state prompted the action.

Back then Harish Rawat also a contender to the chief minister's post had shown his displeasure at losing to Mr Bahuguna. Sources told NDTV then, that Mr Rawat's camp wanted key ministries including the post of Assembly Speaker and had made their displeasure known.  The morning Mr Bahuguna was sworn in; several of Mr Rawat's supporters gathered and shouted slogans in support of Mr Rawat.

Of the notices served to 100 party workers, notable among them is President of the State Youth Congress Anand Singh Rawat who is also the son of Mr Rawat. Also in the list is Pradeep Tamta, MP from Almora and Rajpal Kharola who contested the Vidhan Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from Rishikesh.

"Due to their actions during the state elections and behaviour in the party, it was deemed fit to have them suspended. However we have given 100 members a chance to explain themselves," said Dhirendra Pratap, State Congress General Secretary.
