Morena:

The driver and cleaner of the dumper that allegedly mowed down a constable as he was trying to stop the vehicle carrying illegally mined sand from the Chambal River in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, were arrested today, officials said.

The accused driver, Tehsildar Gurjar, absconding since the incident on Sunday last, was arrested from Karua village in Dholpur district of Rajasthan following an intense search, Morena Superintendent of Police (SP) Navneet Bhasin told PTI.

The SP said they are questioning him to get more details about the incident that has once again highlighted the activities of sand mafia in Madhya Pradesh.

The Constable, Dharmendra Chouhan (40), posted at Noorabad Police Station, was crushed to death while flagging down the dumper, suspected to be belonging to sand mafia, on Sunday.

The truck was carrying illegally mined sand from Chambal River near a village in Morena district. A case under Indian Penal Code Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was filed in connection with the incident.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and directed it to submit a report within 15 days.

Another accused, Suraj Gurjar, was also arrested, Additional Morena SP Raghuvansh Prasad Bhadoria said.

Tehsildar and Suraj have been handed over to SIT for questioning, he added.

The vehicle owner, Ramlakhan alias Bunty, was apprehended yesterday.

Acting on a PIL, the Madhya Pradesh High Court banned sand mining in the river more than five years ago, observing that it posed a threat to 'gharials' - a species of crocodile- who lay eggs in the sand.
