Television actor Karan Oberoi has been arrested for allegedly raping and blackmailing a woman in Mumbai. He will be in police custody till May 9, news agency ANI reported.
The actor allegedly raped the woman on the pretext of marrying her, the police said.
"Karan Oberoi not only raped the woman and filmed the act but also demanded money from her threatening to release the video if she did not pay up," police official said quoting the FIR that was registered at Oshiwara Police Station.
Based on the woman's complaint, Karan Oberoi was arrested on Sunday and booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion), senior inspector Shailesh Pasalwad said.
The accused actor started his TV journey with Mahesh Bhatt's Swabhimaan, where he played Bobby and went on to star in shows like Saaya, Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, Inside Edge, among others. He was also a member of a Hindi boy band "A Band of Boys", which was formed in 2001 and appeared in several advertising campaigns.
Karan Oberoi has also been active on social media.
