TV reality shows irk Rajya Sabha members
New Delhi: Mushrooming of television reality shows on Wednesday drew ire of members in the Rajya Sabha who said several programmes involve "dirty" content aimed at improving the TRPs.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Kamal Akhtar (SP) gave an example of a new television programme 'Sach ka Samana' where a celebrity is asked to face a polygraph test.

He said obscene questions are asked by the anchor of the programme and gave a recent example when a woman was asked in the presence of her husband whether she would have physical contact with another person.

When she said no, the polygraph test said the answer was wrong, Akhtar said asking what impression would be created on the husband.

Referring to programmes like 'Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' and 'Balika Vadhu', he said though the latter was projected as a serial on eradication of social evil, it was portraying child marriage as a virtue.

Many members supported Akhtar with Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan directing the government to take note of it.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prithviraj Chavan said the government was ready for a structured debate on the subject.

Several TV channels, engaged in fierce competition, have launched high profile reality shows at prime time.
