On January 12, the Supreme Court upheld the three year term meted out by the Bombay High Court in the Alistair Pereira hit-and-run case of 2006. However, Pereira has not yet surrended before police despite of his bail being cancelled.
His residence in Mumbai is closed. His lawyer has said he has no clue about his whereabouts and has said that the onus is on him to surrender.
The Mumbai police on their part have said they can act only if they are asked to issue an arrest warrant.
In November 2006, Alistair Pereira, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, lost control over his car and ran over labourers sleeping by the road side. Seven constructions workers were killed and 8 others were injured.
The Supreme Court upholding the Bombay High Court verdict slammed the state government for not appealing against the 3 year term, saying it could have asked for a higher sentence.
