Two militants killed, Armyman injured in Kupwara encounter

Srinagar: Two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were killed in an encounter in a village in Handwara area of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir today. One Armyman was injured in the five-hour-long encounter, launched jointly by the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Security forces cordoned off a house in Malikpora village in Vilgam area of Handwara, 85 km from Srinagar, following information about presence of militants there, an official said.

He said the militants opened firing on security forces, who retaliated, triggering off a fierce gunbattle.

While one militant died in the initial assault, the other remaining militant was killed after heavy gunbattle and severe damage to the house where he was hiding.

For last two months around 20 militants have been killed by the security forces in the Valley.
