Two Students of Jadavpur University Arrested for Allegedly Molesting Another Student
The incident had triggered massive protests by students.
Kolkata: Two engineering students of Kolkata's prestigious Jadavpur University have been arrested over the alleged molestation of a second year student on the campus premises on August 28.

The incident had triggered massive protests by students who had demanded an impartial probe into the alleged molestation; they were upset with the ongoing investigation in the college and alleged that two students had visited the girl at home and asked inappropriate questions.

When the university refused to remove the two members, the students last week stepped up their protests and surrounded the office of the Vice Chancellor Abhijit Chakraborti, whose call to the police led to a midnight crackdown in which some students were allegedly dragged and manhandled.

To protest the alleged molestation as well as the police action on campus, university students had also organised a massive demonstration -- one of the biggest non-political rallies in recent times - in the heart of Kolkata last week.

The state government had on Monday set up a panel, headed by the Calcutta University Vice Chancellor, to investigate the alleged molestation and submit a report within 72 hours.

The University had witnessed fresh protests on Thursday morning when the Vice Chancellor arrived at his office. As the news of Mr Chakraborti's arrival spread, students rushed to the administrative building and immediately sat on a dharna. They also shouted slogans demanding his resignation.
