"Two undertrial prisoners have sustained 'critical' injuries in an attack by another inmate at Aksa sub-jail in Odisha's Ganjam district", a police officer said.
"All three of them shared the same ward at the sub-jail", he said.
"S Balaram Reddy, an accused in a murder case, hit Rabi Das and Sunil Reddy with a cement brick yesterday," said Jailor Siba Shankar Tripathy.
"The exact reason behind the incident was not clear yet, but jail officials suspect that previous enmity could have led to the attack", he said.
"The injured inmates were initially taken to a community health center at Aska, where the doctors referred them to another district hospital, around 45km from the sub-jail", Tripathy added.
Rabi Das, an accused in a murder case, has been languishing in jail since May 2017, while Sunil Reddy was arrested for his involvement in a dacoity case in June 2018. Balaram has been lodged in Aksa sub-jail since December 2012.
