Ludhiana:
On a day four men were convicted of the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl that horrified the nation, a two-year-old girl was hospitalized after being allegedly raped by two men in Ludhiana, Punjab.
The police claimed several people have been rounded up, but the main suspects are a physically challenged man and an 80-year-old.
The toddler was assaulted and left bleeding by the roadside on Tuesday. She was spotted hours later by a man who alerted the police and took her to the hospital. She is said to be in a critical condition.
The police said the child was sleeping with her parents, both labourers, in the slums when she was kidnapped by her attackers. At 2 am, her father woke up and realized she was missing. He also alleged that the men stole Rs 8,000.
"They should be punished severely for such a crime," the father said.
The crime once again highlights that such assaults continue unabated despite the nationwide outrage after the Delhi gang-rape.
