Yadav had been booked twice for rape earlier - a verification before he was engaged as a driver with Uber would have weeded him out. Also, he did not have the PSV badge, a must for anyone driving a public transport vehicle in the city.
The police have filed a cheating case against the company. "FIR has been registered against Uber for cheating its customers and violating lawful orders of government," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma. (Read:

The company has also been banned from plying its vehicles in and around the Capital. It had also been proposed that Uber be asked to fold its operations in India, but Union minister Nitin Gadkari said it would be like "banning the railways for train accidents". (

According to the company's website, all Uber ridesharing and livery partners must go through a rigorous background check that leads the industry. Yesterday, in a statement, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick said, "We will work with the government to establish clear background checks".
