Uddhav Thackeray to adopt tigers

Mumbai: Expressing support to the cause of wildlife preservation, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray has volunteered to adopt a pair of tigers at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai.

"Uddhav has written a letter to us, expressing his willingness to adopt a pair of tigers," Park director P N Munde said on Monday.

In the letter, Uddhav has asked for ways in which he can help in wildlife conservation at the park. "We are awaiting the final approval for the adoption scheme from wildlife headquarters," Munde said.

A wildlife enthusiast and photographer, Uddhav has also offered to launch a state-wide campaign to save the big cat, symbol of the party founded by his father Bal Thackeray.

Uddhav also expressed concern over the dwindling tiger population.

Maharashtra has two large tiger reserves, Melghat and Tadoba Andhari, which have seen a spurt in cases of poaching and destruction of the tiger's habitat.

Munde said the park officials are getting good response from individuals and corporates for the adoption scheme and people are keen to adopt the wild animals by paying for their upkeep.

The park spends around Rs 50 lakh per year on animals and maintenance of their enclosures and has floated the animal adoption scheme for 46 animals in captivity, including tigers.
