Union Minister AH Khan Chowdhury says Mamata Banerjee's workers fired at him in West Bengal

Union Minister AH Khan Chowdhury says Mamata Banerjee's workers fired at him in West Bengal
Malda: Political violence in West Bengal took a serious turn today after Union Minister A H Khan Chowdhury was allegedly fired at five times while moving in an open jeep in the Malda district of West Bengal today.

An angry Congress party has alleged the involvement of Trinamool Congress workers in the attack while the ruling party has rubbished the claims of any attack on Mr Chowdhury.

Mr Chowdhury has told the local TV channels that he suspects the involvement of Trinamool Congress workers in the attack.

His niece and Congress Member of Parliament, Mausam Noor, blocked roads in Malda to protest the firing. Agitated party workers also blocked roads at Kaliachak.

The Trinamool Congress has denied the allegations. The party tweeted after the incident: "In their desperation, the Congress in West Bengal are using their fertile imagination to concoct an incident which did not take place."

Savitri Mitra, minister in the West Bengal government, has rejected any claims of an attack on the Union Minister and has called the incident "a lie".

Mr Chowdhury is the MP from Malda South and was campaigning in Kaliachak for the panchayat elections being held in the state, when five shots were allegedly fired at him.

"We strongly condemn this violence which is an attack on the people and democracy, " said CPM's Brinda Karat. She also alleged that Trinamool activists were involved in rigging the polls in Burdwan district.
