Union minister Pallam Raju to resign over Telangana decision

Union Minister Pallam Raju has said he is deeply offended by the cabinet's decision on Telangana

New Delhi: The government is being whiplashed today by its decision to approve the blueprint for the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Union minister Chiranjeevi resigned last night in protest; today, another minister, Pallam Raju, who handles Human Resources Development, said he is quitting as well. (10 latest developments)

Mr Raju said that he first offered to resign after last evening's cabinet meeting which green-lit the carving out of Telangana, one of the three regions of Andhra Pradesh, as India's 29th state. (Track live updates)

"The PM asked me not to take a decision in haste. I have reconsidered and have decided to resign. I have sought an appointment with the PM," Mr Raju said. (Read: who said what)

Like other politicians fighting the Centre, Mr Raju belongs to Seemandhra - the regions of Coastal Andhra and Rayalseema - that will comprise the state of Andhra Pradesh after Telangana becomes its own state.
