NEW YORK:
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif addressed the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly session today.
Here are the highlights:
- Despite Cold War constraints, UN served international community as a beacon of hope
- Confrontation has returned between many powers
- Terrorism is spreading, poverty is increasing, human rights violations rampant
- To be able to pose these issues among nations, powers committed to collective action
- Partisan interests must not stand in the way of the environment
- Pakistan supports reform of the UNSC, we need it to be more democratic, accountable.
- Not a council which is an expanded club of the powerful, privileged
- Pakistan has long been a victim of terrorism
- We'll fight it in all its forms, irrespective of who are sponsors
- Global threat of terrorism cannot be defeated
- Several countries are the perpetrators are being sucked in to the vortex
- Palestinian flag being raised an inspiring sight, we look forward to the day when Palestine becomes a full fledged member of the UN
- We welcome the comprehensive Iran nuclear agreement
- Pakistan, Afghanistan relations transformed under the government in Kabul
- Pakistan made strenuous efforts to facilitate process of Afghan reconciliation
- Pakistan will persist in the endeavor to promote peace in Afghanistan
- Pakistan greatly appreciates China's role in promoting peace in Afghanistan
- History of South Asia is of missed opportunity.
- Development is my government's first priority
- Peace can be achieved with dialogue
- The urgency of addressing Kashmir issue is imperative
- Thousands have died in their struggle to express themselves and break free from oppression
- Co-operation not confrontation should define our relations with India
- Ceasefire violations rampant causing loss of life
- Want to promote with India, a peace agreement
- We must request for a complete ceasefire along the LOC
- We propose that Pakistan, India reaffirm not to use force under any circumstance
- Kashmir must be demilitarized
- Pakistan doesn't want an arms race in South Asia
- We cannot however remain oblivious to the growing number of armaments
- We look forward to playing our part to build a brighter future of peace and prosperity
