UP bans Liberhan-Report-related functions

Lucknow: With a view to prevent any untoward incident following tabling of the Liberhan Commission report on the demolition of Babri Mosque in the Parliament on Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh government has banned staging of any kind of function either to welcome or condemn it.

"Strict instructions have been issued throughout the state not to allow any kind of function by anyone either to welcome or condemn it," ADG (law and order) A K Jain told reporters in Lucknow.

Strict action would be taken against anyone trying to exploit the situation to spoil communal amity, especially in Ayodhya and Faizabad, Jain said.

Joint patrolling by magistrates and police officers were also being undertaken at all sensitive places so as to ensure that anti-social elements do not take advantage of the situation, he said.

The government had sounded a statewide alert on Monday in view of the Liberhan commission report "leakage" in media and had directed the authorities to take necessary pre-emptive measures.
