UP By-Election Results 2018 Highlights: In Big Upset For BJP, Samajwadi Party Wins Both Gorakhpur And Phulpur Lok Sabha Seats

• I want to thank all journalists here. Through you, I thank the people of both the Lok Sabha constituencies.
• Poor, farmers, labourers, unemployed youth, women, I thank them all.
• First, I thank Mayawati ji too. We got her support, as well as that of the NCP, Peace Party, the Left. Many forces came together to support our win.
• The numbers that are coming are in thousands but lakhs of people in these areas have voted for the Samajwadi Party
• Election results in UP always send out larger political messages. When this can happen in the seat of the Chief Minister and the deputy chief minister - there is so much public anger here, imagine the rest of the state.
• Farmers were promised loan waiver, young people were promised jobs, demonetisation and GST broke the back of business and trade.
  
• "On the floor of the house, he (Yogi Adityanath) said I am Hindu, I don't celebrate Eid. On the floor of the house, they said conduct encounters, have them killed. I thought I was backward. But the words they used, they called us an alliance of the rat and snake."
• This is a win for social justice too. "People have united against the BJP, responded to their misgovernance."
• People who work the hardest, you don't respect them? Treat them like insects?
  
• People were shown false dreams, they haven't fulfilled a single promise, this is the result of that. No party has gone back on their promises at such a scale like the BJP. People have taught them a lesson for that.
  
• "The government that hurts people, when the time comes, people teach them a lesson. It is a mandate on both the state and central government. Achhe din did not come but at least they managed to unite the people."

• "I have never said progress should take a backseat. We kept listing our achievements through the 2017 elections."

• "There was a huge number of complaints about EVMs (electronic voting machines) in Gorakhpur and Phulpur. If the vote was done through ballot paper, BJP would have lost by lakhs."
• I can only laugh at allegations of caste politics. When I was talking of work in 2017, they were assuring all castes separately that the next chief minister will be from their caste.

• We accept the results, I congratulate the winners from Phulpur and Gorakhpur
• I wish them the best and hope they will contribute to the progress of the  state
• We failed to understand the significance of the alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party
• We will study where we went wrong and form a strategy to tackle this political trading between the Samajwadi Party and the BSP
• Samajwadi Party, BSP and Congress were separate at first, but in the middle of the election they decided to do a deal and form a dysfunctional alliance
• We failed to understand it, and  somehow, over-confidence was one of the reasons for it
• The BJP candidates losing in both the seats we had is a reason to introspect
• We will strive to make better policy in the future
• And people will understand the attempt to start an age of political transactions in the state
• Local issues are crucial in by-polls and low voter turnout also affected the result
• In the national elections there will be different issues. PM Modi's development agenda will play a role there
• We need to study the result instead of being overconfident
• These elections are lessons, they need to be analysed so that we perform better in future
