New Delhi:
Uttar Pradesh farmers protesting against the acquisition of their land for the Yamuna Expressway have now brought their anger and frustration to the Capital.
Thousands of them are coming in to Delhi through the Ghazipur entry point on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, marching to the Ram Leela ground in old Delhi. From here they will be marching to Jantar Mantar, the closest they can get to Parliament. They plan to corner the government by gheraoing Parliament. The Rashtriya Lok Dal claims at least 80,000 farmers will take part in the protests today.
Police is being deployed in large numbers along the route. Traffic has come to a complete halt in many of the border entry points, as thousands of farmers are making their way into the Capital.
The farmers say the money they are getting for the land taken away from them is too low. They also want the government to amend the Land Acquisition Act.
"Our land should not be taken away at any cost. If the government forces, we will fight and die but will never give in," said one of the farmers.
They are also protesting against the police firing, in which three farmers were killed.
"We are requesting the Central government to stop such injustice meted out to the farmers. The UP government is not doing good. The fertile land between the Ganga and the Yamuna has always belonged to the farmers," said another.
The Congress incharge for Uttar Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh, has said the farmers should gherao the state Assembly and not Parliament.
"Instead of protesting outside Lok Sabha, let us go and protest at the UP Assembly. I don't think the farmers should gherao Lok Sabha. During the bandh called by the farmers in UP, they said they won't cause any inconvenience to the public. The idea is to make sure that their voices are heard," he said.
