Vikas Dubey, the UP gangster behind the cold-blooded killing of eight policeman last week, was killed in the encounter after a road accident on Friday morning while being taken to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh from Madhya Pradesh, where he was arrested yesterday.
Vikas Dubey snatched the gun of a policeman and tried to run but was surrounded, the police said, asserting that they had tried to get him to surrender. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
"The car overturned and policemen and the accused were injured. Then Vikas Dubey grabbed a gun from an injured policeman and ran. The police team caught up and surrounded him and tried to get him to surrender, but he refused and started firing. The police had to fire back in self-defence," the Kanpur police said in a statement.
"Vikas Dubey was injured and taken to hospital. He died during treatment," said the statement.
Vikas Dubey, on the run since he organised the massacre of eight policemen in Kanpur last Friday, was arrested yesterday at a temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
Hours before Dubey's encounter, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court last night seeking security for the gangster. The petitioner had claimed the gangster may be killed in an encounter.

Vikay Dubey's Encounter Will Restore Public Confidence In Police, Government: Constable Ajay Kashyap
Constable Ajay Kashyap, who sustained injuries in the Kanpur encounter on July 3, on Friday, said that gangster Vikas Dubey's encounter will restore public confidence in police and the government.
Speaking to ANI, he said that the encounter brought solace to his soul.
"It has brought solace to my soul. It would restore public confidence in police and government," Mr Kashyap said.

Dubey, the main accused in the Kanpur encounter case was arrested by the police in Ujjain on Thursday morning. He was on the run for the last several days and had come to Ujjain to offer prayers at Temple, where he was identified by a security guard at the shrine.
The gangster was the main accused in the encounter that took place in Bikru village in Chaubeypur area of Kanpur last week, in which a group of assailants allegedly opened fire on a police team, which had gone to arrest Dubey. Eight police personnel were killed in the encounter.
Dubey managed to escape and the Uttar Pradesh police launched a hunt and raised the bounty on him to Rs 5 lakh, news agency ANI reported.

UP: Shivali Village Distribute Sweets Post Vikas Dubey's Encounter, Say, "Finally We're Free"
The people in Shivali village in Kanpur on Friday distributed sweets after history-sheeter Vikas Dubey was killed in a police encounter.
"We are very happy a big terror from our area has been eliminated. We are feeling free. Earlier we used to be scared that he could do anything. We would like to congratulate the personnel of Uttar Pradesh STF," said Atul Kumar, a local.
"Everyone is very happy and we are making arrangements for sangeet (entertainment). I salute the eight policemen killed during an encounter with Dubey," said Lallan Bajpai, another local.
Earlier today, the families of the policemen who were killed in the Kanpur encounter on July 3 expressed relief and happiness over the killing of gangster Dubey, news agency ANI reported.

Crowds Gather Around Encounter Spot, Some Take Selfies
Curious crowds hovered most of the day around the spot where Vikas Dubey was shot dead on Friday, even when all there was left to see were bluish smudges on a dirt road.
The smudges were blood stains that had changed colour, perhaps due to the rain and the forensic examination.
For part of the day, an overturned SUV could be seen on the highway to Kanpur. It was later towed away.
Police claimed that gangster Vikas Dubey, who was being brought back here after his arrest in Ujjain, got out of the car after it had overturned on the slippery road, taking along an injured policeman''s pistol.
Dubey, accused of killing eight policemen last week, then fled down a dirt road that joined the highway.
He was gunned down when he refused to surrender and opened fire at policemen who had surrounded him, according to the police version.The smudges marked that spot.
Flooded agricultural fields and bushes run along the dirt track. As curious onlookers from nearby villages headed there, the place became a selfie spot with people clicking pictures on their phones.
On the nearby highway, people peeped out of passing vehicles. As traffic choked the road, constable Anil Kumar Yadav asked people not to gather there, news agency PTI reported.

Tehseen Poonawalla Seeks NHRC's Intervention Into "Fake Encounter" Of Gangster Vikas Dubey
Political activist Tehseen Poonawalla on Friday urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene into the alleged "fake encounter" of gangster Vikas Dubey and claimed that due process of law was not followed in the matter.
"I have filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission on the alleged fake encounter of Vikas Dubey this morning as part of a "script" to protect UP politicians, the Yogi Adityanath government and other Uttar Pradesh police officers," Poonawalla tweeted.
In the following tweet, Mr Poonawalla also urged the Supreme Court to take up the matter.
Vikas Dubey, who was arrested from Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Thursday, was killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police after he allegedly attempted to flee.
In his complaint, Mr Poonawalla urged the NHRC to take cognisance of the encounter.
"There are already several complaints about the illegal and unconstitutional behaviour of the Uttar Pradesh Police before the court of law and Human Rights Commission. Giving a free hand to kill surrendered accused must have brutal consequences," the complaint said.
It said that five of Dubey's aides have been killed by the police over the last week.
"Dubey''s closest aide Aman Dubey was shot dead after he was chased down by the police to a village on July 5, 2020, and his other aide, Bauva Dubey, was shot dead in an encounter in Etawah, about 220 km from state capital Lucknow," the complaint said.
"Furthermore, hours before Vikas Dubey's surrender, two of his accomplices had been shot dead by UP Police in separate encounters. It is alleged that Vikas Dubey''s links with the police and politicians helped him stay out of jail for years. To avoid being encountered Vikas Dubey came forward and surrendered himself publicly outside Mahakal temple in Ujjain," it added.
The complaint also alleged that the media, which were following the police car were "mysteriously stopped" just before the encounter, and questioned how the vehicle they were travelling in topple on a perfectly good road.
"How did Vikas Dubey a physically unfit man with a paunch escape after pushing physically fit police officers to get out of a toppled vehicle particularly because the accused is always seated in the middle," Mr Poonawalla asked in the plea, news agency ANI reported.
Dubey is the main accused in the Kanpur encounter case, in which he and his men allegedly opened fire on the police team which came to arrest him on July 2 late night. Eight policemen were killed in the encounter.

UP: 7-Country-Made Bombs Recovered From Ration Shop Owned By Vikas Dubey's Accomplice
Kanpur Police said that seven country-made bombs were recovered from a ration shop here owned by an accomplice of Vikas Dubey, who was killed in an encounter with the police, on Friday.
"Seven country-made bombs have been recovered from the government ration shop owned by Dayashankar Agnihotri, an accomplice of Vikas Dubey at Bikru village in Chaubey police station area," police said.
A case is being registered in this regard.
Dubey was arrested by the police in Ujjain on Thursday morning. He was on the run for the last several days and visited Ujjain to offer prayers at a temple, where he was identified by a security guard at the shrine.

Congress Demands Judicial Probe Into Entire Episode Involving Vikas Dubey
The Congress on Friday demanded a judicial probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the entire episode involving gangster Vikas Dubey to bring out the truth about those who had granted protection to him and the alleged political-criminal nexus in Uttar Pradesh.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said at a press conference that the killing of the gangster in an encounter raises several questions and sought answers on who were the people sitting in echelons of power who were granting protection to criminals like him.
Dubey was shot dead Friday by police, who claim he was trying to flee after the car carrying him from Ujjain overturned on the outskirts of the city.
"Congress demands that the unholy nexus between organised crime and the ilk of Vikas Dubey with those sitting in the echelons of power be probed by a sitting Supreme Court judge," Mr Surjewala said at a press conference.

BJP's Shiv Pratap Shukla Tears Into Priyanka Gandhi For Raising Questions Over Vikas Dubey's Encounter
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Shiv Pratap Shukla has slammed Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for raising questions over gangster Vikas Dubey encounter.
Speaking to ANI, the BJP leader said, "She (Priyanka Gandhi) should first ask these questions to herself. I am sure she will get the answer. A person who has killed one person is a small criminal but a person who has committed a crime with the whole country is a big one. Also, a person who commits economic crimes is a bigger criminal out of all."
Soon after gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted (translated from Hindi): "The criminal is dead, but what about those who aided the criminal?"

Proud Of UP Police: Families Of Killed Policemen Over Vikas Dubey's Death
After the notorious gangster Vikas Dubey was killed on Friday morning, the families of the policemen who were killed in the Kanpur encounter on July 3 expressed relief.
Tirath Pal, the father of the slain policeman Jitendra Pal Singh, who was one of the eight policemen killed in the Kanpur ambush, said that the news of Dubey's death has brought some relief after suffering the loss of his son.
"I am very proud of Uttar Pradesh Police. Whatever they have done today has brought solace to my soul. I thank the administration and Yogi government," he said while speaking to ANI.
Kalika Prasad Bind, the father of killed sub-inspector Nebulal Bind expressed her happiness with how Dubey met his fate. "Whatever happened to him is for the good. I demand strong punishment for informers within the police for leaking the information of the raid to Dubey. The government should make sure the traitors pay for their deed," Mr Kalika said.

Petition in Supreme Court yesterday feared Vikas Dubey's encounter killing
A petition was filed in the Supreme Court last night seeking security for the gangster. The petitioner had claimed the gangster may be killed in an encounter.

Some policemen accompanying Dubey were also injured in the incident, says senior cop
News agency PTI reported senior Superintendent of Police (Kanpur) Dinesh Kumar P as saying that the accident took place when it was raining heavily and the police vehicle overturned near Kanpur.
"Some policemen accompanying Dubey were also injured in the incident," the SSP was quoted as saying by PTI.
The senior cop, according to PTI, did not specify whether they were injured in the accident or during the encounter.

Vikas Dubey snatched pistol of an STF personnel, tried to flee: Kanpur cop
News agency PTI, quoting Inspector General of Police (Kanpur) Mohit Agarwal, reported that Dubey was killed in the encounter after he tried to flee from the spot following the road accident at Barra area in Kanpur.
"Dubey was injured in the encounter and he was declared dead in the hospital," ADG Kanpur range, J N Singh, told PTI.
