UP govt to move Supreme Court on Varun issue

UP govt to move Supreme Court on Varun issue
Lucknow:

The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday night said it will challenge in the Supreme Court the recommendation of the state advisory board against slapping of NSA on BJP candidate Varun Gandhi for his alleged hate speeches.

"The state government will challenge the advisory board's decision before the Supreme Court," Additional Cabinet Secretary Vijay Shankar Pandey told PTI here.

The statement came after the UP Advisory Board held as invalid invoking of the stringent National Security Act against Varun.

FIRs were registered against 29-year-old Varun for allegedly delivering inflammatory speeches in Dalchand locality of Pilibhit, about 300 km from Lucknow on March 7 and in Barkheda village on March 8.

After surrendering in Pilibhit on March 28 when his supporters clashed with the police, the state government invoked NSA.

Varun was shifted to Etah jail from the Pilibhit jail due to security reasons. On April 16, the Supreme Court granted him parole till May 1, which was later extended till May 14.

Gandhi is contesting as BJP candidate from Pilibhit parliamentary constituency, which is going to polls on the fifth and last phase on May 13.
