New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the CBI and the Association of Victims of the Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) on a petition filed by Gopal Ansal, co-owner of Uphaar cinema, challenging his conviction by the trial court in the fire tragedy case.

Justice HR Malhotra also sought response of the CBI and AUVT on the petition of another convict, out of a total of 12 convicts, MCD official SS Sharma and fixed the next hearing on January 4.

A New Delhi court had on November 23 sentenced the Ansal brothers - Gopal and Sushil Ansal - to a two-year jail term for causing death by a negligent act. The two were granted bail soon after pronouncement of the punishment.

Seven other convicts - Radha Krishan Sharma, NS Chopra, Ajit Chowdhary (Uphaar managers), Manmohan Unniyal (cinema's gatekeeper), Brij Mohan Satija, AK Gera and Bir Singh (all DVB officials) - held guilty for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, were awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment each.

Three others, including SS Sharma, who were convicted for offences similar to that of Ansal brothers, were also given two years jail term each and granted bail by the trial court.
