Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury Suspended by Speaker Admits He Crossed 'Lakshman Rekha'

Adhir Choudhury had banged a placard on the Speaker's table.

Parliament witnessed continuous uproar today over the passing of bills, which ended with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asking Congress lawmaker Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to leave the House and suspended him for the rest of the day for unruly behavior.

At the height of it, CPM's Mohammed Salim was heard telling the Speaker, "This is not the Vatican City and you are not the Pope." Within minutes, the House was adjourned till tomorrow.

Mr Chowdhury had stood up on a stand and banged his placard on the Speaker's table when a discussion was underway on the Delhi High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2015.

At the time, several Congress members - including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deepender Hooda and Sushmita Deb, were holding protests at the Well of the House. But no one from the party, including party chief Sonia Gandhi, made any move to stop Mr Chowdhury.

The Congress has been disrupting House since the beginning of the Monsoon session, demanding the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Angry at Mr Chowdhury's unruly behaviour, Ms Mahajan adjourned the House for an hour around 3 PM. Chaos started again as the House re-assembled, and the BJP demanded that Mr Choudhury apologise for his misconduct.

As the Congress and the Left members started protesting, Ms Mahajan said, "Despite my repeated requests, the protest with the placard didn't stop. It was interfering with the others' rights to speak. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury disregarded authority of the chair."

Mr Chouwdhury later apologised, saying, "I crossed the Lakshman Rekha and happily accept the punishment by Speaker."
