Kolkata:
US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her Kolkata office today. The agenda for the meeting is not yet known.
Ms Banerjee withdrew support to the UPA government at the Centre last week over its allowing foreign investment in retail, hiking the price of diesel and capping the number of subsidised LPG cylinders to households.
FDI in retail, which has now been allowed by the Union cabinet, will attract several US companies like Walmart to India.
On May 7, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had met Mamata Banerjee during a visit to Kolkata, a visit that Ms Clinton described as "remarkable". The Bengal Chief Minister later said that she assured Ms Clinton that investors to her state would be secure and invited more US firms to put their money in the state.
