New Delhi: US Ambassador to India Timothy Roemer has met Home Minister P Chidambaram. The meeting comes less than a week after Chidambaram's visit to the US, when he met Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, armed with evidence of Saeed's role in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
"US thinks it is important to go after Hafiz Saeed," the US ambassador said after the meeting. He said Pakistan must dismantle the terror infrastructure.
Pakistan has registered two cases against the terror mastermind under the Anti-Terrorism Act after coming under intense pressure from India and the US.
Of late, the US has been using strong language about the need to punish those responsible for 26/11.
Earlier on Thursday, Roemer said, "There are 5, probably 6, suspects currently being held in Islamabad for 26/11 attacks. It is extremely important that these blood-thirsty perpetrators be brought to justice and put behind bars, and receive sentences commensurate with their crimes against India, US and the world."
Chidambaram's hard talk in Washington seems to have had some effect, but the charges under which Saeed has been booked have nothing to do with the Mumbai attacks. Saeed has been held before only to be released and this time this time India and the US will be watching to see if Islamabad is serious about dismantling the infrastructure of terrorism.
