US should monitor aid given to Pak: India

New Delhi: India has reacted to Pervez Musharaf's statement that aid given by the US has been used against India. Minster of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor has said that the US needs to monitor the aid it gives more closely.

The former Pakistan president told a television news channel that military aid provided by the US to Pakistan for the war against terror during his tenure had been used to strengthen defences against India. This is the first such admission by any top Pakistani leader.

Musharraf admitted that he had violated rules governing the use of the military aid, and justified his actions by saying he had "acted in the best interest of Pakistan".

India and several prominent lawmakers in the US have been accusing Pakistan of having used the US funds to strengthen its defences against India.

However, Pakistan has denied any wrongdoing.
