Uttar Pradesh: Flood situation grim

Lucknow: After Andhra Pradesh and North Karnataka, the big flood worry is in Uttar Pradesh where major rivers continue to swell.

Reports suggest water released from Nepal raised the level of the Sargu, which has now crossed the danger mark, destroying crops.

Water flowing over the Lucknow-Gorakhpur national highway has also led to unprecedented road jams.

Traffic on the national highway between Katra and Ayodhya was also suspended due to rise in level of Ghagra. Many villages remain marooned in the region.

Nearly 173 villages in eastern districts of the state were affected by flood, of which 94 had been marooned.

District officials in Basti said that people in flood affected areas were being relocated to safer places.

Though Sharda had started receding, it was still flowing above danger mark at Palliakalan and Sharda Nagar (both in Lakhimpur district), the report said.
