Uttar Pradesh: Minor stabbed in the eye for resisting rape

Kannauj: In the Ghur-purwa village of Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, a 14-year-old girl, Preeti, was stabbed in both her eyes by men who tried to rape her on early Saturday morning.

She was dragged into the fields by the assailants Kuldeep and Niranjan and when she resisted, they assaulted her and stabbed her eyes.

She was discovered in the fields by villagers and was later rushed to the district hospital.

Doctors say that she has lost vision in her left eye and the cornea of her right eye has been badly damaged.

"The left eye is completely damaged. The inner parts of the eye are severely damaged. The cornea is badly damaged, may not come back to its normal condition," said the doctor who operated upon her.

She has now been referred to a hospital in Kanpur for treatment.

Meanwhile, one of the accused, Niranjan, has been arrested.

"The two accused are from the girl's village," said Rajendra Singh, Superintendent of Police, Kannauj.

A case of rape and attempt to murder has been registered against the two accused.

A constable and a sub-inspector have been suspended as they failed to register an FIR when the girl was first brought to the police station.

In another incident on June 10 in the Lakhimpur Kheri district in the state, 14-year-old Sonam's body was found hanging inside the Nighasan police station sparking protests from opposition parties in the state.

The victim's mother in her complaint had alleged that the girl was raped and murdered after which 11 policemen were placed under suspension.

The second post-mortem conducted by a panel of expert from Lucknow confirmed that the girl was strangulated, but ruled out rape.
