Dehradun: As the real magnitude of the devastation in Uttarakhand slowly comes to the fore, stories of human tragedy and loss are also emerging. While some families grieve the loss of their loved ones, it's a long and agonising wait for several others - 1,000 people have reportedly died and hundreds are still missing.
Among the latter is a three-year-old girl. Lying on a hospital bed in the state capital Dehradun, the child is waiting to be reunited with her parents who went missing since the devastating flash floods struck the hill state. She is badly injured - both her legs are fractured and she has bruises all over her body.
The girl was brought to the hospital by rescue workers from Rishikesh on June 24, just a week after torrential rains pounded Uttarakhand, triggering landslides and flash floods. But no one knows her name or has any information about her family.
"Workers of the helpline services brought her here... Both her legs are fractured after the flood disaster... The health of the girl is fine, but she is continuously crying," said Dr SK Jain, Emergency Medical Officer.
The child's story is one of several others in Uttarakhand - separated from their families and staring at an uncertain future.
