Uttarakhand Governor Tried To Save Government Against Rules, Alleges BJP

BJP leader Bhagat Singh Koshyari said Congress government failed on March 18 after some of its legislators rebelled.

New Delhi: Former Uttarakhand chief minister and BJP leader Bhagat Singh Koshyari today said the Harish Rawat government had lost right to prove majority to stay in power as he questioned Governor KK Paul's role in the political crisis in state.

"That day 68 of the 70 members were present in the Assembly of which 37 MLAs voted against the government. That means the government failed and it also lost right to stay in power. Later our MLAs wrote to the secretary to bring a no-confidence motion against the chairman and the deputy chairman of the House," Mr Koshyari said in Delhi during a press conference, minutes before Uttarakhand was brought under the President's Rule.

He said Congress government failed on March 18 after some of its legislators rebelled. "We raised the issue with the Governor and requested him to immediately dismiss the government in accordance with the law," the BJP leader said.

"We were expecting justice from the Governor. But instead of dismissing the government, the Governor tried to save it by giving them 10 days' time to prove majority, which was against the rules and regulations of the Vidhan Sabha," he claimed.

"Had the Governor been fair, he would have immediately suspended the government in the state and imposed President's Rule," Mr Koshyari said.

Capping a nine-day high-voltage political drama, the Centre today brought Uttarakhand under President's Rule citing a Constitutional breakdown in the wake of a rebellion in the ruling Congress, which slammed the decision calling it a "murder of democracy" and a "black" day.
