Dehradun: Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker on Sunday evening disqualified nine rebel Congress legislators, confirming media reports from last night.
The nine are former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna, former agriculture minister Harak Singh Rawat, Pradeep Khatri, Amrita Rawat, Pranav Champion, Subodh Uniyal, Shailarani Rawat, Shailendra Mohan Singhal and Umesh Sharma Kau.
Lawyers of these legislators had earlier met the Speaker after they were served notices of disqualification on Saturday.
The dramatic order had came just as an emergency meeting, called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take stock of the situation in Uttarakhand, concluded in New Delhi and recommended President's ule in the state.
President's Rule was imposed in the state just a day before the crucial trust vote in the state assembly for the Harish Rawat government.
The Centre said the state government was "unconstitutional" and "immoral" since March 18, when the "failed" Appropriation Bill was shown as passed.
The crisis in Uttarakhand had started earlier this month, after nine lawmakers of the ruling Congress, including former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna, had rebelled against the Harish Rawat government. Yesterday, the Speaker had reportedly put them on notice, asking why they should not be disqualified under the anti-defection law.
